Zombie tree-hugger

Posted by Andrea On March - 15 - 2011

Today I casually observed my fifteen-month-old daughter walk around our lounge like a zombie tree-hugger with her arms spread out, turrning in circles…

…and then randomly bouncing up and down.

It was pretty awesome and made me desperate to know what was going on inside her little head. I’m thinking Dawn Of The Dead cum Nel? – Films she certainly didn’t lay her eyes on under my watch! Read the rest of this entry »

I live with a maniac

Posted by Andrea On March - 4 - 2011

Chaos reigns! I have been working for the last fifteen minutes amidst the mayhem of a dive-bombing toddler who is launching herself off the couch, at the foot of which I sit, onto a pile of cushions I have placed next to me to protect ‘oh fearless one’ from breaking her head. Apparently the danger of heights and hard floors does not permeate the consciousness of my fifteen-month-old maniac, and neither do the words “mommy needs to work.” As I formulate these very syllables, my little lovely is using me as a launchpad to boost herself onto the couch and thereafter as a break to stop herself from crashing into any nearby obstacles. The joys of working from home… Read the rest of this entry »

Get your groove on

Posted by Andrea On February - 16 - 2011

Disco Hour: Time – 18:00, Date – every day, Place – my home, Participants – me, man and small child. Note: ‘Disco’ is a loose term for ‘any music that makes you wanna get your groove on’ – from Metal and Eighties to Pop and Disco. Disco hour is party hour. Daddy comes home and the jamming starts.

Music is not just a hobby or a pleasure, it’s a lifestyle and so there is always music, of all shapes and sizes, playing in my home. Not that I have anything against silence; I just don’t prefer it. Music, music and more music… is what keeps me sane. Read the rest of this entry »

Dear Diary: Nightmare on Huddleston Road

Posted by Andrea On February - 16 - 2011

Dear Diary, last night I dreamed that my precious Amelia was a changeling. It was too horrific. Some dastardly little troll or elf (or maybe even a fairy) had swapped my little lovely for a horrid little impostor. In my dream, I knew that Impostor Toddler was not my Amelia but no one would believe me (and for once, I was able to empathise with Angelina Jolie)… that is until my husband saw Impostor Toddler standing in a fire grate but not burning. Then he knew something was wrong. Read the rest of this entry »

The D.E.S.T.R.U.C.T.O.R

Posted by Andrea On February - 1 - 2011

THE DESTRUCTOR restlessly awaits orders from Higher Command. Her eyes dart hither and thither as She contemplates Her next move. Finally, from across the house, Higher Command calls for THE DESTRUCTOR. And THE DESTRUCTOR responds with an immediate stampede toward what She knows to be the cajoling voice of impending mess.

As THE DESTRUCTOR hurtles down the passage at warp speed, innocent bystanders are mindlessly obliterated by an ironic whirlwind of single-minded intent. THE DESTRUCTOR leaves a trail of wreckage in Her wake but casualties are of little consequence when the call of Higher Command propels THE DESTRUCTOR forward. Read the rest of this entry »

What the (expletive) is Pointillism?

Posted by Andrea On February - 1 - 2011

“She’s practising pointillism” – if ever there was a cryptic answer, this was it. To make sense of this strangeness, I let my logical brain take over (a true rarity) and as I unleashed Sherlock Holmes on the words, two poignant questions emerged: who was ‘practising pointillism’ and why? Here’s what I discovered: the culprit; my fourteen-month old daughter, the reason; it’s fun. Read the rest of this entry »

A child’s eye

Posted by Andrea On January - 25 - 2011

The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existing. One cannot help but be in awe when he contemplates the mysteries of eternity, of life, of the marvelous structure of reality. – Albert Einstein

One of my most favourite things about being a mom is living vicariously through my daughter as she experiences LIFE for the first time. Read the rest of this entry »

Dear Diary: Cuddles are a girl’s best friend

Posted by Andrea On January - 14 - 2011

Dear Diary, my daughter loves cuddles. She cuddles her teddies (naturally)… but she also cuddles her bath sponge, her favourite green pyjama top, her play-play telephone and just about anything that tickles her fancy. Sadly, cuddles for mommy and daddy have become a tad more sparse as toddlerhood slowly but surely takes over consciousness and a strong will and independent attitude emerge. My little girl is growing up… Boo Hooooo! Mommy NEEDS a cuddle today. Diary – I think I will accost my daughter from behind and demand some affection. What a genius plan! Forced love. Ha ha ha ha ha (evil laugh).

A more christmassy Christmas

Posted by Andrea On December - 26 - 2010

Christmas seems to be a whole bunch more fun with children around. I guess it gives us (adults) the chance to revert back to that childhood excitement that spontaneously erupts at the mere thought of presents, lights, decorations and sweeties. Some of us (and I pat myself on the back) don’t really need an excuse to embrace the spirit of Christmas with excessive (childlike) enthusiasm, children or not. Even so, my one-year-old daughter has made Christmas time all the more lovely. Everything Christmassy has been tainted with a splash of Amelia – the colours are brighter, the mulled wine tastier, the Christmas trees bigger and ther Gingerbread men.. well… gingerier. The magic of one

Posted by Andrea On December - 21 - 2010

My beautiful Amelia

It is really hard not to get all soppy and sentimental when I look back at the first year of your precious life. So, to avoid a flood I will simply say that I adore you. You inspire me to be better and I love you madly. You make me crazy, you make me laugh, you make me cry (for better or worse) and you make me feel more than I ever thought possible. My world is a magical place with you in it. Amelia, you are my muse and I will fight for you always.

Here’s what I know about you. You love the colour blue. You love bath time – one of your favourite activities is to play Picasso with your bath crayons. You wave goodbye to your daddy every morning when he picks up his bicycle helmet and heads for the door, and you get excited when you hear the door open at the end of every day because you know that your daddy is home.
